About The Prize
The Berlin Art Prize is a newly established independent award annually honoring contemporary art from Berlin.
On June 22nd, 2013 the Berlin Art Prize will be awarded for the first time. Founded by contributors to Berlin’s arts and culture scene, the objective of the prize is to support the creative endeavors of Berlin-based artists. Four winners, selected by an independent jury of art professionals, will be awarded with an exhibition, representation in the catalog, prize money and a two-week resi- dency in a villa in San Martino, Italy. An additional 20 shortlisted artists will be presented in the exhibition and catalog.
One work of art will win the prize in each of the four categories. Any artist who has been living and working in Berlin for a minimum of six months was eligible to apply for the Berlin Art Prize.
The Jury
The winners of the Berlin Art Prize are selected by an independent, annually chang- ing jury. Jury members are strongly committed to cultural endeavors and have demon- strated an intense professional engagement with contemporary art. The jury will be “blind” during the selection process – meaning the identities of the artists will not be revealed.

The Categories
The four, deliberately unconventionally titled categories (Best Choice of Color, Best Composition, Driest Concept and Jury’s Choice) express an oppositional stand- point towards the tendency of over-theorizing in the reception of contemporary art. With the blatancy of the titles, defining a specific scope of evaluation for a work of art becomes difficult.
The distribution of the prize-winning works into one of the four categories is subject to the free interpretation of the jury. In contrast to the simplistic titling of the categories, the artworks themselves will be viewed with earnestness.
The jury’s choice for each category will be substantiated with a statement clarify- ing their reasoning.
The Founders
Sophie Jung is an art historian. She studied in Berlin and Istanbul, specializing in modern architecture and urbanism. Today she works as a freelance writer and journal- ist, writing for newspapers, magazines and contributing to catalogs on contemporary art. She is currently working on a volume of essays on design theories with the HfG Ulm and the Museum of Applied Art in Cologne. In 2012 she was awarded with a teach- ing position at the Humboldt University in Berlin.
Zoë Claire Miller is an artist and curator. She was born in Boston, Massachusetts and moved to Heidelberg in 1995. There she studied Anthropology, Philosophy and Romance Languages, and later Fine Arts in Karlsruhe. She completed her education in 2010 with a degree in Sculpture. She lives and works in Berlin, and her work has been exhibited throughout Germany. As a curator she runs the project Galerie Europa, showing experimental international solo and group exhibitions of contemporary art. As an artist she works mainly with ceramics.
Alicia Reuter is an editor and writer. After completing her Bachelor’s in Art His- tory, she moved to Florence, Italy to continue her studies, working at the Museo Pecci as a curatorial assistant. She has lived in Berlin since 2005, and received a Master’s Degree in Art History from the Freie Universität specializing in contempo- rary art. In Berlin she works with 032c and is the Contributing Editor at I Love You Magazine and the Editor of ENDLESS. Her writing about contemporary art and culture has appears regularly in catalogs and publications such as ARTnews, Project Maga- zine, SOMA Magazine, FAD and NY Arts Review.
Ulrich Wulff is a painter from Berlin. For ten years he has continued to expand his media and local radius of action by compiling and participating in exhibitions at home and abroad, including the “Professor Winkler Scholarship” in Berlin, “Pop-eye and the Endless Nonsense of Drawers” in Los Angeles, and “Alarm Level” in Innsbruck. He collaborates with artist friends in publishing “Heckler and Koch, Berlin” and the realization of the virtual gallery European Fine Arts.
