#THIRTEEN: Sarah Howe.

1.If you weren’t an artist, what else would you be?
I think I’d quite like to be a psychiatrist or scientist of some kind. I think I’d quite like to be a psychiatrist or scientist of some kind.

2.Can you tell us more about your work and what are the main ideas you would like to express?
My photography explores human nature and the ties between the emotional and physical landscape with an emphasis on peoples relationships with objects and immediate environment. I feel very privileged whenever someone allows me to photograph them as I believe it is very giving notion on their part. For this reason I want to express not only my own experience of the individual but allow them the opportunity to present a something of themselves that may not be always recognizable in the context of everyday life. I like to build suggested narratives behind my images that throw into question the fragility and self creation of our own identity.

3.How do you start the process of making work?
I usually think about my work for far too long and usually fins that it is when I am more spontaneous and just go with feeling or idea that my work is most successful. The element of collaboration is something I find integral to my approach as photographer and therefore building some kind of pre-existing dialogue with each subject is very important to me before I begin shooting. I think like most creative people inspiration can be drawn from everything, but I find living in the city and taking long walks through the ever changing landscape/communities feeds into my work a great deal. Being immersed in an environment that is not my own is part of the thrill and intrigue of being a photographer for me.

4. Do you consider the viewer, when making your work?
When I take a photograph it is not really about the viewer but about the interaction between myself and the subject. I think if the exchange between the two is not the focus of the image then there is something missing from a photograph which has an impact on the viewer. So in a very round a bout way then I suppose I do.

5. Name 3 artists that have inspired your work?

Phillip Lorca diCcorcia

Sarah Moon

Robert and Shana Parkeharrison

6. Name 3 of your least favourite artists.

hmm

7. What defines something as a work of art?
That’s a tricky one and i think different for everyone.

8. In times of austerity, do you think art has a moral obligation to respond topically?
No I think sometimes you need an escape.

9. Anytime, any place – which artist’s body would you most like to inhabit?
Errm

10. What is your favourite ‘ism’?
surrealism

11. What was the most intelligent thing that someone said or wrote about your work?
When I first started taking photographs I went on a trip to Venice. It was the first time away from home and a huge turning point. I was there on a sort of photographic holiday/workshop and the photographer there was Nina Berman. After a day shooting we reviewed the images, we were shooting the carnival full of bright colours and a real party atmosphere, yet all my pictures she said seemed very sad, the figures lost in the city. It wasn’t a particularly profound thing in itself but it was when I realised that without thinking I was able to express myself through my work.

12. And the dumbest?
Perhaps more sweet than dumb. My nan recently wrote a limerick about my work, I won’t write it here to save her embarrassment but it did make me laugh.

13. Which artists would you most like to rip off, sorry, I mean appropriate as a critique of originality and authorship?
I love Boris Mikhailov’s Yesterday Sandwich, it’s a complete contrast to my own work so i really don’t think I could get away with it. But if i could I would.

14. Do you care what your art costs? State your reasons! To make or to sell?
I care how much it costs to make, because it means your restricted especially as a recent graduate into a recession. To sell of course I’d like to be able to sell it as it’s a taken a lot effort and time make, but I would still make it regardless.

15. If Moma and the Tate and the Pompidou wanted to acquire one of your works each, which would you want them to have?
I’d be happy for them to take any.

16. What’s next for you?
I have a few new projects on the go at them moment, and hope that being part of The Other Art Fair might give might mean meeting some exciting people who might want to work with me in the future.
