Mark Davey answers FADs Questions + VIDEOs

1 If you weren’t an artist, what else would you be?
I’m not a child anymore, limitless opportunities are fast escaping. Taking responsibility for your choices stop me from thinking ‘what if…’

2. Anytime, any place which artist’s body would you most like to inhabit?
I would much rather choose to swap for a day with a person whose life is far different to mine and has a completely different career, rather than ‘another artist’. There are so many more interesting people on the planet other than artists… A rebel fighter storming Gadaffis compound? An amazon river tour guide? The person that brings Barrack Obama his coffee in the morning?

3 What is your favourite ism?
orgaism.

4 What was the most intelligent thing that someone said or wrote about your work?
I really cant remember.

5.And the dumbest?
It someone is giving me their time and opinions on my work, it would be wrong of me to label them as dumb.

6 Do you care what your art costs? State your reasons!
I try to make as few compromises as possible, whilst still being aware of my financial limitations. I am far more likely to spend £90 on a few bits of steel, than I am £90 on a new wardrobe.

7 What are the three big ideas that you would like your work to express?
I’m still looking for a single big idea, I’m only 26.

8 How do you start the process of making work?
The process usually starts quite naturally and fluidly, with hazy ideas and plans forming in my head for weeks or months, and when these become more concrete I start doing some very quick sketches, mostly to work out the sizes and dimensions. Then I like to dive straight into the making, with things like the mechanisms, joints and mountings evolving and changing, but the overall appearance of the finished piece is usually pretty close to the initial hazy thought.

9. What’s next for you?
Next for me is what is always next for me, the constant thinking up of new sculptures and turning them into reality, whilst trying to balance that with being self sustainable, something that I am still working out how to do successfully.

10 If you could ask yourself one question what would it be ? and what would be the answer ?
It would be would I do anything different? And the answer would probably be yes.
