Regenerated flagship buildings named venues for art and design degree show festival

Nottingham Trent University’s signature Newton and Arkwright buildings, which have just been regenerated as part of an ambitious £90m scheme, will be key venues for this year’s art and design degree show festival. The iconic project – the most significant estate development in the university’s history – will be used as a platform to showcase an array of students’ creative work in May and June.

Students from courses across the university’s School of Art and Design and School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment are preparing to exhibit their final year work for the annual event. The shows – also being held in the Bonington and Waverley buildings – are the highlight of the Schools’ calendars and give the university a chance to demonstrate the original, innovative and inspiring work being produced at undergraduate level.

Open to the public and free to attend, the shows will span a range of media and creative practices including sculpture, painting, illustration, graphics, photography, print, moving image, theatre and digital design. Directional fashion, knitwear and textiles, decorative arts, architectural design projects, futuristic products and cutting-edge furniture and interior solutions will also be on show.

The Gothic-style Arkwright building, with its sublimely lit studios, will be fittingly used as the exhibition space for School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment courses. Shows, in the building’s cruciform rooms, will include interior architecture and design; architecture and architectural technology; and product design and furniture and product design.

Work from courses across the School of Art and Design can also be viewed in Bonington, a purpose-built centre for creativity, and Waverley, a restored, listed building with true design heritage, and home to the very first Nottingham School of Art and Design in 1843.

Photography students have organised for their exhibition, Raw, to be displayed on screens at Bonington and venues across the city from May 24 to June 4. The photography degree show festival, which is a unique event with international recognition, is now in its 14th year.

All of the degree shows will be from June 5-9, with June 3 being a preview evening for industry contacts who wish to see the work and take an ideal opportunity to network.

Students will go on to participate in prominent external London design shows after the Nottingham event, including New Designers, D&AD New Blood, and Free Range, Europe’s largest showcase of graduate art and design work.

The Dean of Nottingham Trent University’s School of Art and Design, Professor Judith Mottram, said: “The degree shows are the high point of our academic year, where we delight in being able to share the work of the undergraduate students with the city, and with visitors from further field. The creativity and dedication of our staff and students is a vital part of the economic and cultural life of the university and the region. These events enable the business community, as well as friends and family, to see the results of our work with the next generation of artists, designers and creative industry professionals.”

The Dean of the School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment, Peter Westland, said: “This is my first art and design degree show festival as dean and, after hearing about previous shows, I can’t wait to see the high quality of work on offer. It’s a particularly special year with the Newton and Arkwright buildings featuring heavily in the degree show calendar, they really will provide the perfect space for such an impressive range of talent.

“This is an exciting, innovative and multidisciplinary School with a strong reputation for providing challenging, professionally-accredited courses that are highly engaged with their respective industries. The degree shows will provide an excellent platform for both students and professionals to network and explore new links and opportunities.

REVIEW: Free Range 2014 – Photography @ Old Truman Brewery

Graduate shows are a chance to spot talented artists early on but they’re usually difficult to get to, largely because they are all over the country and most only last a few days over a weekend. That’s what makes Free Range so useful, it combines a lot of degree shows in a spacious venue just off Brick Lane.
