Plus PRIVATE VIEW: 88DAYS By Jacob Perlmutter THURSDAY 15th APRIL 6pm – 9pm
nspired by Robert Frank’s The Americans, British photographer Jacob Perlmutter set off on his own journey across America. 88 days captures the spirit of the voyage and the people he encountered.
I wanted to look beyond the obvious spaces of MTV culture and big stadiums, instead looking at the gritty underground movements of New York and the jazz clubs; the empty sounds of the landscape, the music of the wind and the birds and the solitary trucks and the man who whistles through his dry lips as he kicks a crushed can down a dusty path. Music through photographs where a moment has been captured, but the sounds resonate and hang’- Jacob

It has been half a century since Robert Frank, one of America’s most loved photojournalists went around the United States photographing the country; the result of which being an incredible document of the times, The Americans. Heavily inspired by street photography, the ever-changing dynamics and non repeat moments, exciting new talent Jacob Perlmutter embarked on a three month journey around America at the beginning of July 2009. Setting out both in homage to Frank’s journey and work, but also to document and discover how America has changed since then.

‘I went to America with a set of images in my mind and came back with another in my hand’.

At the end of the three months Jacob returned with a collection of over 2500 photographs, a few tattered clothes and a host of tales and discoveries. The result of which, 88 Days, showcases a truly beautiful and insightful body of work from a very talented upcoming individual.

A 60-page book ‘88Days’ and mini journal book ‘The Debris of My 88Days’ is now available to purchase also.
