A new show by contemporary arts specialists Robilant + Viena working with French and Italian Old Masters specialist Stair Sainty has bought together the work of UK based artists with old masters, resulting in a show that surveys work that is both informed by and steeped in art historical awareness.
Just as Old Masters, and artists such as Turner and Picasso, were acutely aware of their predecessors, so today are many contemporary artists re-examining the past and looking at their own art through a new lens. Nine new works have been commissioned from contemporary artists who chose, one painting on which to base a new work from amongst dozens of works dating from the fifteenth to the nineteenth centuries. While contrasts may be striking, the exhibition intends to emphasize the cooperative and continued dialogue between the past and present.
Curators Mira Dimitrova and Mercier Kinney have brought together pieces by Tom Gallant, Sigrid Holmwood, Barnaby Hoskings, Graham Little, Justin Coombes, Marta Marce, Matthew Weir and Douglas White to sit alongside works by Francois Boucher, Pierre-Jacques Volaire, Anne-Louise Girodet-Triorson, Ary Scheffer, Cesare Danidini, Carlo Dolci and others.
