A New Zealand artist has caused a bit of controversy amongst the artistic community after winning a contemporary art award utilizing the discarded materials of his competitors.
Dane Mitchell’s “Collateral” recently beat out 282 other pieces to win the 2009 National Trust Waikato Contemporary Art Award, as well as $15,000. It was created after Mitchell wrote to the staff of the gallery where the competition was being held, and asked them to stack the remnants of the packaging materials thrown away by the other artists who were setting their pieces up .
