John Gray will be talking to Nick Hackworth about the ideas that underpin his work including notions of progress in the modern period, utopianism, science and technology as world-changing forces and the relationship between art and politics.
John Gray is Emeritus Professor at the London School of Economics. From 1998-2007 he was Professor of European Thought at the LSE and before that was Professor of Politics at Oxford. He has been Visiting Professor at Harvard, Yale and the Autonomous University of Madrid.
Gray’s recent books include Black Mass: Apocalyptic Religion and the Death of Utopia, Straw Dogs: Thoughts on Humans and Other Animals, Heresies: Against Progress and Other Illusions, Al Qaeda and What It Means To Be Modern and False Dawn: The Delusions of Global Capitalism. Gray’s Anatomy: Selected Writings was published by Penguin in March 2009. He writes articles and reviews for numerous publications including The Guardian, The Independent, The New York Review of Books, The New Statesman and The Spectator.
