Walter De Maria (1935–2013, Albany, USA) forged a practice where scale, geometry and elemental forces meet. A key figure in Minimalism and Land Art, he worked across sculpture, installation and large-scale outdoor interventions, often using precise mathematical structures to frame the vastness of the natural world.
From the charged expanse of The Lightning Field—400 stainless-steel poles stretching across the New Mexico desert—to the rhythmic, immersive environments of The New York Earth Room and The Broken Kilometer, De Maria explored how repetition, distance and duration shape perception. His works operate as encounters rather than objects: spaces defined by stillness, atmosphere and the viewer’s own sense of time.
Quietly monumental, De Maria’s practice reveals the subtle drama within order and the sublime possibilities of scale.
