The jury commended Kalu’s bold and compelling work, praising her lively translation of expressive gesture into captivating abstract sculpture and drawing
Nnena Kalu (b. 1966, London, UK) creates exuberant, large-scale works that surge with colour, pattern and physical energy. Working primarily with paper, marker pens, tape and found materials, she builds dense accumulations of repeated lines, shapes and forms—spirals, coils, bands—that push outward from the wall or pool across the floor. Her process is rhythmic and instinctive, driven by repetition, momentum and a deep commitment to making.
Kalu’s practice resists neat categorisation. Her works sit between drawing, sculpture and installation, often expanding beyond their initial surfaces to occupy space with a sculptural insistence. Colour is applied with intensity and persistence, creating surfaces that feel alive, vibrating with movement and pressure.
Rooted in autonomy and sustained creative focus, Kalu’s work embodies a powerful sense of self-determination. The resulting forms are joyful, assertive and unapologetically bold—visual fields that invite immersion while asserting their own irreducible presence.
