Claudette Johnson (b. 1959, Manchester, UK) creates powerful drawings and paintings that centre Black presence with gravity, intimacy and authority. Working primarily with charcoal, pastel and paint, she renders the body at scale—heads, torsos and limbs filling the frame—so that flesh, weight and posture become the core of the image.

Johnson’s figures are not portraits in the conventional sense; they are encounters. Faces meet the viewer directly, bodies lean, rest or assert themselves, carrying an emotional and physical density that resists spectacle. Her surfaces are worked slowly and deliberately, allowing touch, pressure and revision to remain visible. Colour and line operate as structural forces, shaping space while amplifying presence.
