As Los Angeles gears up for Frieze Week, the city’s openings arrive early — spilling out across galleries, fashion spaces, parking lots and repurposed storefronts. From artist-run flea markets and live performances to major painting shows and design-led exhibitions, these events capture LA at its most improvisational: part art fair orbit, part local scene energy, unfolding across the days before the main crowds land.
Sunday 22nd February
The Hole 6PM–9PM
The Hole presents 99CENT, a special project in a shuttered 99cent store this Frieze week in Los Angeles. The aisles of the store become an artist flea market of sorts activating the galleries West Coast network of artists and makers, while the walls will be covered with works by Barry McGee, artworks from his personal collection, as well as pieces from over a hundred friends. There will be an Anti-Fascist Zine fair, bands and performances; an artist healing center & community hangout zone.
This special building at 6121 Wilshire has been a fixture for the local community for almost forty years, and has been boarded up for the past year, awaiting future activation. Sprüth Magers 6PM–8PM
Monika Sprüth and Philomene Magers to present an exhibition of new paintings by David Salle at the Los Angeles gallery, the artist’s first solo exhibition in LA since 1997. Arguably the leading postmodern painter of the last forty-five years, Salle combines images from a variety of sources, all rooted in what the artist calls the “presentational mode.” His practice is grounded in the art of juxtaposition; his “style” is the integration of disparate, contrasting styles, all resolved into dynamic, highly malleable compositions. Salle’s image clusters are analogous to musical chords, in which notes, at precise intervals to one another, are struck at the same time, producing an emotional resonance. @david_salle @spruethmagers

Carpenters Workshop Gallery Los Angeles presents Tatoo, Ingrid Donat’s first solo exhibition in California. One of the most influential living artists in the decorative arts, Donat is known for imbuing materials like bronze, leather, wood, and textiles with warmth and vitality. Works feature Donat’s signature aesthetic of mark-making and scarification include Commode Tatoo, whose square, geometric patterns resemble reptilian skin, like that of a crocodile or even a mythical dragon.
