Last Thursday, 27th of June, I spent my evening kicking it with some funky emerging art kids at the Old truman Brewery on Brick Lane at the Free Range Art Show private view. Free Range provides a brilliant platform for graduates from a wide range of Universities to showcase their creative talents to a diverse audience in the epicentre of London’s creative scene-so naturally I had to be there to witness the action! The show, which is now on Until the 1st of July, features the best of the best works from BA students from the following universities: Leeds college of Art, Coventry University, University of the West of England, Oxford brookes University, Lougborough University, University of East London, and University of Northampton.
Now I will be honest with you, after walking around the stone facade and making my way to the entrance, I was almost sure there was going to be alot of ‘bad’ student art. Cliche things and ideas which have already been touched on, mirrored, painted and then repainted, installed and then deinstalled, constructed and then deconstructed- etc. But wow. I was blown away! Kudos to the next generation out there- because they are definitely hungry and ready! And seemingly more intuned with the technological ways of connecting with people to further places and beyond. Dedicated, talented and armed with business cards and delightful conversation- the art world should prepare itself for a new chapter in the ever evolving artistic dimension. There was such an eclectic mix of people paintings, photographs, sculptures, installations and performances. Not to mention that the space was wicked! Go and check it out!
