Hilde Lynn Helphenstein, the artist, writer and art-world commentator best known as the creator of the influential Instagram account Jerry Gogosian, has died in São Paulo, Brazil. She was 40 years old. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.
Helphenstein became one of the contemporary art world’s most recognisable digital voices through Jerry Gogosian, the satirical Instagram account she launched in 2018 while recovering from a serious illness. Combining memes, market commentary, industry gossip and sharp observations about the contradictions of the art world, the account rapidly gained a devoted following among artists, dealers, collectors and institutions.
Originally anonymous, Jerry Gogosian evolved from an insider joke into a significant cultural platform. Helphenstein used humour to critique everything from art-market excess and social climbing to influencer culture and institutional power structures. By the time her identity became widely known, she had amassed a following of more than 150,000 people. She had become one of the most influential commentators working at the intersection of art and social media.
Her influence extended beyond Instagram. Helphenstein hosted the podcast Art Smack, published The Jerry Report newsletter, curated exhibitions, and worked with organisations including Sotheby’s. In 2022, she curated Suggested Followers: How the Algorithm is Always Right, an exhibition examining the role of social media algorithms in contemporary art discovery.
In recent years, Helphenstein had begun repositioning her career beyond the Jerry Gogosian persona. Last year she announced plans to wind down the account, writing that she had “grown out of it” and was looking towards new creative projects. In interviews she spoke about ambitions to write, develop television projects and expand her practice beyond social media commentary.
Born in the United States, Helphenstein initially worked as an artist and gallerist before illness forced her to close her gallery. During a lengthy recovery period, she began creating the memes that would become Jerry Gogosian. What started as a personal project soon became one of the most closely followed and discussed accounts in the international art world.
Tributes have begun appearing across social media from artists, curators, writers and dealers who credit Helphenstein with changing how the contemporary art world talks about itself online. Through satire, humour and often uncomfortable honesty, Jerry Gogosian exposed the absurdities, ambitions and anxieties that shape contemporary art culture while building a community that extended far beyond Instagram.
Her death marks the loss of one of the most distinctive and influential voices to emerge from the art world’s digital era. @jerrygogosian
