Amsterdam Art Week is a celebration of the many layers of the city’s art scene — bringing together artists, galleries, collectors, pioneering art spaces, and esteemed residencies, while also embracing new perspectives from around the world. With presentations by galleries throughout the city and exhibitions from both private and institutional collections, the week promises to be one of Europe’s most ambitious and exciting contemporary art events.

Beyond showcasing the best of the commercial, institutional and experimental non profit art worlds, the week will also include a rich public programme of talks, films, workshops and studio visits — as well as one-off happenings. Join in with ‘group jogging’ between galleries, book fairs and even a gallery slumber party. Or, for children, collect your first ever art work (for a small price) or partake in an art treasure hunt across the canalled city.

The full programme can be viewed now online at www.amsterdamart.com from 15th April 2025.

Amsterdam Art Week Director Martina Halsema said,

“We’re delighted to present the programme for this year’s Amsterdam Art Week — our most ambitious edition yet and which highlights the energy and collaboration present in our arts ecosystem here in the city. Across the city, galleries and institutions will showcase cutting-edge exhibitions, welcoming a global audience to experience Amsterdam at its cultural best; you will experience unforgettable moments directly with artists as they take the centre stage. The programme offers meaningful ways to engage — from intimate studio visits and artist-led tours to performances, talks, intellectually stimulating and accessible encounters throughout the week. As Amsterdam celebrates its 750th anniversary, it’s the perfect time to explore the city as an open-air museum, discovering its vibrant art scene one location at a time – step inside an artist studio, witness a one off live event; bring your family – this year is all about experiencing the personal encounter with the many artists across the city”

All participating galleries will open their doors with not only special events for art week but also a range of both established emerging artists debuting new projects for Amsterdam Art Week. Head into the city to explore the best of the commercial scene. Amsterdam West Day & Night – 24th May

During Amsterdam Art Week, one special day is dedicated to highlighting a specific district in the city. This year, the spotlight is on Amsterdam West — with a vibrant programme of exhibitions, performances and parties during West Day & Night. Don’t miss the opening of The Room is Ours, a special Patta pop-up exhibition taking over an empty office building. The exhibition features works by Patta Academy alumni, and will be accompanied by BBQ, BYOB, music, and more. The night wraps up with the official afterparty at ISO, featuring a performance and DJ sets.

Another major new location for 2025, is the Red Light District, where new and established artists and locations come together; including in some new spaces. Stop by De Oude Kerk to see a major site specific solo show by Kimsooja, or at W139 to visit Sunflower Soup’s activist engagement.  Gallery de Schans will also host a unique show on the love of music and fandom, created by artists who have mental or physical disabilities and/or a background in psychiatry. Residencies are also of great importance to the city’s artistic talent and this rich tapestry is on the stage for art week. The Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, is a breeding ground for international and multidisciplinary talent in the city and is a core partner again this year with Amsterdam Art Week, a tradition which has grown since the art week began. Amsterdam is known for the connection between its gallery scene and the residents and alums of this prestigious art residency programme. Visitors will be able to go behind the scenes and experience the work of this year’s cohort at the Rijksakademie Open Studios. In addition, De Ateliers — the oldest so-called artists’ workshop in the Netherlands — presents its annual Offspring, showcasing works developed by second-year participants during their time at the residency. This year’s participating artists are: Finn Theuws, Flora Fritz, Greta Eimulyt, Levi van Gelder, Lizzy Deacon, Lorian Gwynn, Ruoru Mou, Sofía Salazar Rosales, Swan Lee, and Tumelo Mtimkhulu. Alongside these major institutions, smaller residencies such as the Thami Mnyele Foundation, featuring Nella Ngingo and Rossel Chaslie, and BijlmAir, with Nseabasi Akpan, also contribute to the rich ecosystem of artistic development in the city.

Art Castle, Projectspace 38/40, puntWG, ROZENSTRAAT – a rose is a rose is a rose, Vlaams Cultuurhuis de Brakke Grond, VU Art Science Gallery, W139 and Het Salon. At de Appel, Every Act of Struggle: Intrusion and Assembly delves into the complex discourse surrounding how cultural institutions in the Netherlands confront historical violence and systemic injustice, particularly within the context of their colonial legacies.

This program approaches the art world as an interconnected ecosystem, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and flexibility in response to changing social, political, and economic circumstances. The symposium will be opened and led by curator Fatos Üstek. She will engage in conversation with Zoé Whitley and Zeynep Kubat in a plenary panel discussion.
