Tabish Khan the @LondonArtCritic picks his top 5 painting exhibitions to see in London this Autumn.
Yu Hong: Islands of the Mind @ Lisson Gallery
These figures are all living on the edge – whether facing a fire, marching past one, or on a chair bracing for the impact of a great wave. The way the artist captures colour and light is masterful. I loved her work when it was shown in a church in Venice, and this is another impressive exhibition of large-scale painting. Until 14th December.
In the footsteps of the East London Group @ The Nunnery Gallery
I didn’t know a lot about the East London Group until I saw this excellent array of paintings of East London, both historical works from 100 years ago to contemporary artists still using the East End as their muse. It’s great to see this part of London being a regular inspiration for artists over many decades.
Until 22nd December.
Lewis Hammond: This Glass House @ The Perimeter
I’m a fan of Hammond’s dark figurative paintings, whether close-ups of individuals or bodies entwined. They are surreal but there’s also vulnerability in these poses, which become charged and introspective in the low light settings of the space. Until 20th December.
Lawrence Calcagno: Redux @ Amar Gallery
Lawrence Calcagno was a student of Mark Rothko and Clyfford Still and that’s obvious in his paintings that can draw you in, much like a Rothko. He’s a largely forgotten Abstract Expressionist painter, most likely sidelined because he was openly gay with a black partner, and here’s a chance to see a strong selection of his works. Until 1st December.
ING Discerning Eye @ Mall Galleries
There are strong paintings in the Discerning Eye exhibition, alongside drawing, sculpture, photography and video. It’s an eclectic mix of styles from the traditional to the conceptual as you’d expect with 6 judges all offering their tastes and showcasing over 700 works. I’m biased as a trustee of Discerning Eye, but there are some great works and bargains to be found. Until 24th November.
