Independent will partner with Puck on a public program of talks at the third edition of Independent 20th Century on September 5th–8th.
The series of five live events at the fair will feature a focused conversation on artists to watch and the art market with journalist Marion Maneker, Puck’s Art Correspondent, and Loïc Gouzer, the founder of curated auction platform Fair Warning, on the occasion of its debut participation at Independent. The program continues with artist talks featuring Brad Kahlhamer in dialogue with Adam Lindemann, founder of Venus Over Manhattan, and Rebecca Ward reflecting on the influence of Simon Hantaï. We also welcome expert speakers who will share their insights into Sol LeWitt’s works on paper and Heinz Mack’s ceramics on view at the fair. All talks are complimentary with admission to Independent 20th Century, located at Casa Cipriani in the Battery Maritime Building in downtown Manhattan.
The fair was founded in 2022 with a mission to broaden our understanding of the canon of art from 1900 to 2000 and spark conversations that are long overdue.
What is Conviction-Based Art Dealing? A Conversation with Loïc Gouzer and Marion Maneker Friday, September 6, 3PM

Fair Warning is a private, curated auction platform dedicated to innovating the traditional auction model by presenting a single, meticulously selected piece of art for acquisition every week through an exclusive app. Membership is by application, fostering an intentional community of collectors who engage with exceptional works, spanning artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Urs Fisher, Elizabeth Peyton, and more. Fair Warning’s founder and former Christie’s co-chairman Loïc Gouzer will discuss the app’s “conviction-based” business model and its place in the wider contemporary art market in conversation with Puck’s Art Correspondent Marion Maneker, author of Wall Power, a biweekly newsletter illuminating the global art market.
Exploring the Third Place: Brad Kahlhamer’s Fusion of Heritage and Modernism Friday, September 6th, 5PM

For Independent 20th Century, Venus Over Manhattan will dedicate a solo presentation to renowned multimedia artist Brad Kahlhamer, marking his gallery debut and setting the stage for a 2025 solo exhibition. Kahlhamer’s paintings, sculptures, and works on paper reveal the foundations of his exploration into cultural hybridity and identity, influenced by his study of Native American ledger drawings and his immersion in the gritty New York art scene of the 1980s. Moderated by Marion Maneker, this conversation between Kahlhamer and Venus Over Manhattan’s founder, Adam Lindemann, will explore the artist’s unique perspective and the enduring themes that permeate his practice, such as his notion of the “third place,” the meeting point of his diverse cultural experiences.
Zeroing in on Light and Form: The Ceramics of Heinz Mack Saturday, September 7th, 4PM
Featuring Robert Fleck, Professor of Art and the Public Sphere at the Düsseldorf Academy of Art, and Michael Beck, Co-Founder of Beck & Eggeling International Fine Art
One of the founders of the postwar art movement ZERO, German artist Heinz Mack developed his own language of light and color and is regarded as a leading representative of kinetic art. At this year’s Independent 20th Century, Beck & Eggeling International Fine Art, in collaboration with the MACK FOUNDATION, will showcase the artist’s lesser-known engagement with ceramics from the 1990s onward. This discussion brings together the gallery’s co-founder Michael Beck with scholar Robert Fleck, a specialist in the work of Heinz Mack, to reflect on the artist’s multifaceted creative practice and wide-ranging influence.
Color, Form, and Process: Exploring the Art of Sol LeWitt Sunday, September 8th, 2PM
Featuring David S. Areford, Professor of Art History at the University of Massachusetts Boston and author of the forthcoming book Sol LeWitt: To and From Painting, and James Barron, Founder of James Barron Art
James Barron Art’s presentation at Independent 20th Century will feature Sol LeWitt’s inventive, vibrant gouaches exploring variations in color and form alongside several exceptional pieces from the R Series that employ folding, ripping, and cutting as methods of drawing. This conversation between the gallery’s founder James Barron and art historian David S. Areford, the author of Strict Beauty: Sol LeWitt Prints (Yale University Press, 2020) and editor of Locating Sol LeWitt (Yale University Press, 2021), will illuminate the selection of works on view and LeWitt’s wider practice.
A New Relation to Canvas: From Simon Hantaï to Rebecca Ward Sunday, September 8th, 4PM
Featuring Rebecca Ward, Artist, and Tom McGlynn, Artist, Writer, Curator, and Editor at Large at The Brooklyn Rail
Exhibiting artist Rebecca Ward and writer Tom McGlynn, will engage in a conversation centered on the contemporary relevance of French artist Simon Hantaï (1922–2008) and his unconventional painting methods. Hantaï invented the technique of “pliage” in 1960, referring to the act of folding a canvas, then painting it, and finally unfolding the surface to reveal a pattern of morphic or geometric shapes. A dual fair presentation by Luxembourg + Co. will place Hantaï’s experimental compositions in dialogue with new work by Ward that similarly deconstructs the material qualities of canvas as a medium in its own right.
