8 ART FAIRS TO SEE IN NEW YORK – Over a dozen art fairs are opening during the next two weeks below we pick 8 that we think you definitely should go and see from the big galleries at Frieze to the fun, Live art and variety performances at Superfine.

The fair will offer a snapshot of the world’s leading contemporary art galleries, including over 60 participants spanning 25 countries, and showcase a crosssection of the most sought-after names in contemporary art today. Frieze New York will also celebrate the strength of the city as a cultural capital and leader of the international art market, with activations that include collaborative projects with some of the city’s beloved non-profit arts organizations. Future Fair will open its fourth annual in-person fair during New York Art Week. The Fair returns to Chelsea Industrial welcoming over 60 local, national and international exhibitors presenting compelling curated and solo projects. MORE

3 Independent, May 9th – 12th, 2024 at Spring Studios

This will be Independent’s 15th-anniversary edition taking place at Spring Studios, Tribeca, New York featuring 77 galleries with 31 making their Independent debut. This is the largest participation in terms of number of galleries and the most international edition in the fair’s history with 49 North American, 22 European, 4 Latin American, 2 Asian galleries taking part.

As a special initiative for this year’s 15th-anniversary edition, Independent founder Elizabeth Dee and founding curatorial advisor Matthew Higgs are co-curating a focused presentation in the center of the fair, titled 15 x15: Independent 2010-2024, that will feature artists and galleries who have made a significant impact upon the Independent’s history. Superfine Art Fair opens its 30th Fair next week bringing 130 Artists for Gen Z + Millennial buyers who feel frozen out of Major Art Weeks.

Taking over the 3rd floor of a skyscraper building at 151 West 42nd (you might know it as the one with the giant H&M logo on the top), 30,000 square feet of emerging art, plus performance pieces curated by downtown stalwart and arts champion ChaShaMa, a smart mod-meets-retro musical backdrop selected by fair organizer Alex Mitow, a thoughtful local beer and wine list – all contributing to a warm, comfy art-shopping environment that serves to facilitate, lubricate, and encourage direct interactions (and transactions) between artist and audience. 5 1-54 Art Fair, May 1st-4th, 2024 Starrett-Lehigh Building

New York will feature 30+ galleries exhibiting the work of over 70 artists from Africa and the global diaspora, making this edition the largest to date!

Now in its 10th year, this edition will see 1-54 expand its dilating imprint upon the city by relocating to Chelsea, in the heart of Manhattan, once again coinciding with Frieze New York. The fair will be held at the Starrett-Lehigh Building, 255 11th Avenue for the first time, a premier property recognised as a creative campus for influential companies across fashion, entertainment, media, architecture and design.

This year’s fair represents a diverse selection of galleries from Lagos and Lausanne to Miami and London, including eight 1-54 participants making their debut at the fair. This expansion underscores the fair’s commitment to showcasing the richness and diversity of contemporary African art on a global stage. MORE

6 Fridge Art Fair, May 2nd – 5th, 2024 at 33 Seaport Hotel

Fridge Art Fair are gearing up for their 10th Anniversary for a swan-themed birthday party ever.

A “Swan Birthday Lounge” featuring the larger-than-life New York edition of Eric Ginsburg’s Doggie Woggie Wall of Fame featuring iconic inductees like his favorite dog Nick, Scooby Doo, and Goofy, as well as our 2024 inductees including Jackson Pawlick. Our special Lifetime Achievement Award honoring Snoopy will commence the Big Birthday Party Opening Gala on May 1st.

But that’s not all – prepare to be amazed by the stunning Disco Swan Birthday sculpture project by David Craig Ellis, the “Collage and Connect” project by CollaboArtive, a video lounge curated by Kaitlin Martin and David Waage, an untitled installation by Chris Cobb, and a groovy Swan project by Phoenix Roberts. 7 NADA New York, May 2nd-5th, 2024 548 West

NADA to present its 10th edition of NADA New York showcasing a dynamic selection from 92 galleries, art spaces, and non-profit organizations spanning 15 countries and 31 cities including Athens, Bucharest, Ghent, Montreal, New York, Portland, Warsaw, and Seoul. This year’s exhibitors list showcases 59 NADA Members and 34 first-time exhibitors. The fair also features the return of TD Bank Curated Spotlight, a special section organized by curator and writer Simon Wu featuring five presentations from exhibiting galleries, as well as NADA Presents, a programming series of conversations bringing together voices in art and culture. 8 TEFAF New York, May 9th – 14th, Park Avenue Armory

TEFAF New York 2024 returns to the iconic Park Avenue Armory for its 10th edition. Nearly 90 leading international galleries from 15 countries and 4 continents will bring the best in modern and contemporary art, jewellery, antiques, and design to the vibrant art community of New York. Along with exhibitor stands in the Wade Thompson Drill Hall, TEFAF New York will also offer stunning curated spaces in the Armory’s 16 period rooms – a TEFAF exclusive – and dynamic presentations in Creative Spaces throughout the fair.
