Fifth Frieze x Deutsche Bank Emerging Curators Fellowship in partnership with Ikon Gallery
Frieze and Deutsche Bank have confirmed details of their 2024 Emerging Curators Fellowship, which this year will partner with the Birmingham-based public institution Ikon Gallery.

Ikon is thrilled to be the institutional partner for the 2024 Frieze x Deutsche Bank Curatorial Fellowship. Now in its 60th year, and with a new, collaborative leadership, the gallery is committed to nurturing diverse curatorial voices. Our location in Birmingham – one of the first super-diverse cities in the UK – provides a culturally rich and dynamic context for the fellow to develop their skills and practice across exhibition making, public and collaborative programming. We look forward to welcoming and working with the incoming fellow.

Launched in 2020, the initiative is part of Frieze and Deutsche Bank’s wider commitment to amplify diverse voices in the art world by supporting emerging Black and people of colour (POC) curators through 12-month, full-time, paid fellowships within leading arts organizations. Previous iterations of the fellowship have been in partnership with Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead, Chisenhale Gallery in London, The Whitworth Gallery in Manchester, and V&A East in London.
Eva Langret, Director, Frieze London commented:
We’re thrilled to announce Birmingham’s Ikon Gallery as our partner institution for the latest Emerging Curators Fellowship. From the outset, our goal has been to extend our reach across the UK, providing meaningful opportunities at leading institutions outside London. Now entering its fifth year, the fellowship has been pivotal in launching the careers of several young curators. I am proud to share that Kinnari Saraiya, our 2021 fellow who successfully completed a placement at Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, has recently accepted a curatorial role at Somerset House.
Following an open call for applications, Ikon Gallery was selected as this year’s host institution by a panel
including Gus Casely-Hayford (Director, V&A East), Mary Findlay (International Art Curator, Deutsche
Bank), Eva Langret (Director, Frieze London) and Kinnari Saraiya (2021 Frieze x Deutsche Bank Emerging
Curators Fellow, artist and Curator, Somerset House). The organization will receive a £45,000 grant to cover the fellowship costs, inclusive of the fellow’s salary, expenses, travel and research.
Recruitment for this year’s fellow will commence in the summer of 2024, with the placement scheduled to start in September. Meanwhile, the fourth Frieze x Deutsche Bank Emerging Curators Fellowship, in collaboration with The Whitworth and University of Manchester, alongside artist Ibrahim Mahama, is currently open for applications.
