Perrotin has announced the representation of Brooklyn-based conceptual collective, MSCHF.
Concurrent with their solo exhibition ‘Art 2’ on view at Perrotin Los Angeles.
Established by Gabriel Whaley in 2016, MSCHF has ignited conversations across the art world in the last eight years. From provocative stunts like soliciting bank statements at Art Basel Miami Beach to legal battles over creations like the “Satan Shoes” with Lil Nas X, they’ve left an indelible mark.
With a lean team of about 10 members, MSCHF eschews traditional artist labels, preferring to operate as a collective and release their works as “drops,” akin to streetwear launches. Love them or loathe them, MSCHF has honed the art of virality, blending low and high culture, art history and pop culture. They remix familiar products and icons to provoke controversy and ignite conversations on a mass scale. As founder Whaley put it to The New York Times,
“The Jesus shoes were a platform to broach the idea while also making fun of it: that everybody’s just doing a collaboration now.”
MSCHF’s ‘Art 2’ is on view now at Perrotin Los Angeles through June 1st.
