On March 25th grab yourself a bottle of Absynthe or two and head down to Tate Modern for a night of Surrealist fun.
For one night only, Tate Modern will open its doors overnight with an exclusive event exploring the dreamlike world of surrealism. In celebration of the gallery’s major new Surrealism Beyond Borders exhibition, visitors will have a special opportunity to spend the night alongside their favourite works of art while immersing themselves in an evening of surrealist-inspired activity.
The night will kick off from 6pm with Tate Lates’ monthly line-up of film, workshops, conversation, food and a music programme curated by award-winning musician Celeste. Activities on offer will include surrealist sketching and dream mapping workshops, as well as film screenings and talks exploring lucid dreaming, tarot and witchcraft. For the first time, Celeste will perform live from Tate Modern, with her soothing vocals taking over the vast space of the gallery’s Turbine Hall. The performance will be livestreamed from the artist’s YouTube channel. Over in the Starr Cinema, Tate Collective members will have the chance to view an exclusive special screening of Celeste’s new music video alongside her Tate Collective Reframed video and will hear from the artist herself about how she took inspiration from Salvador Dali’s Metamorphosis of Narcissus.
From 10pm, visitors will have exclusive access to the Surrealism Beyond Borders exhibition after-dark with a combined ticket offer. As the night stretches on, overnight visitors can get involved in hands-on workshops, alongside food and drink pop-ups. The night-time soundtrack will be presented courtesy of Global Roots, who have programmed an experience of infinite electronic sounds from DJs and musicians Laurel Halo, Alpha Maid, Damsel Elysium. The night will be brought to a close with a soothing gong bath.
For early-risers, the following morning Tate Modern will present a surrealist session offering families the chance to start their weekend with creative workshops, DJ sets, and a special breakfast offer. Children will have chance to express their inner surrealists through collage and animal drawing activities and create memories to take home in Tate’s uncanny photo studio. The iconic Turbine Hall meanwhile will come to life with music from Zakia (NTS Radio) and Mari* (World Wide FM).
