Josh Lilley has just announced representation of Celeste Rapone (b. 1985, Wayne, New Jersey, USA). Rapone received a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she is now an adjunct professor in painting and drawing. She first appeared in Josh Lilley’s 10th-anniversary group show in 2019, and her gallery exhibition earlier this spring, Retreat, stands as her UK solo debut and largest presentation to date. She will make her first European fair appearance as part of the gallery’s Frieze London 2020 presentation in October.

Rapone is a detail-oriented formalist, a natural 21st-century heiress to the lessons of Chicago Imagism; indeed, she shows in her adopted home city with Corbett Vs. Dempsey, committed historians of the postwar period in the region. In her paintings one finds material invention, humour, high-low free play, and resourcefulness with the figure — hallmarks of that midwest avant grade, but pushed, for her world. Rapone imagines the body unbridled, extruded and magnified, expanding into the world and to the walls of the canvas. The nobility of art history and the inherent raw functions of the body collide on stages that depict, typically, the finest details in the private lives of contemporary women.
