Josh Lilley has announced the representation of Erica Mahinay.
Erica Mahinay (b. 1986, Santa Fe, New Mexico, US) creates paintings that oscillate between the architectural and the abstract, each work utilising a unique ratio of materials and motion, colour and light, to develop distinct character through a synthesis of technical and intuitive application.
Mahinay’s process is physical, a language channeled through her body and emitted from her fingertips. Although her rich surfaces are formed through various methods of accretion and subtraction- dripping or pouring, using rollers and brushes, scrawling with an oil stick and tossing dry pigment onto wet surfaces – her predominant tools of creation are her hands. Interacting with her materials in a flowing choreography of pushes and pulls, swipes and swirls, Mahinay’s fingers imbue her compositions with posture and mass. She forms the floating shapes and luminous layers of her paintings through this dynamic contact, manipulating and negotiating via touch, feeling the plane of each engagement.
Mahinay’s first UK solo exhibition took place at Josh Lilley in London in April 2025 and the gallery will present new work this December at Art Basel Miami Beach.
