In news that is sure to thrill art collectors and vinyl enthusiasts the world over, the one-off works of art will be available to buy via an auction on Artsy. All proceeds will go towards mental health charity Mind. Bidding closes on 12th September at 21.00 GMT.
The auction is the final part of this year’s Secret 7” project, one of the leading marriages of music and art in the creative calendar. Launched in 2012, Secret 7” invites 700 of the world’s biggest artists, leading design studios, independent creatives and the public to create unique sleeve art each year which is exhibited, then auctioned off for charity.
The 10 artists were given a white Rega Planar 1 turntable as their blank canvas and asked to create something unique. Turner prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller has applied Neolithic arrowheads to his work, whilst Gavin Turk has re-envisioned his turntable as a heritage plaque referencing ‘Cave’, one of his most iconic pieces which famously ‘won’ him a fail for his Royal College of Art masters.
Mind ambassador Stuart Semple’s turntable is a nod to Joy Division’s artwork and music, with lyrics from Disorder running around the cover, whilst French illustrator and graphic designer Jean Jullien has used the turntable’s movement to create a playful animation.
The 10 turntables will be on display in the Ace Hotel lobby in Shoreditch, London from 30 August – 12 September. There will be a public event to mark the end of the auction on 12 September in the Ace Hotel lobby from 7pm – late with DJ sets from Gavin Turk and Pete Fowler.
