Recording one year in the life of the celebrated, controversial, internationally famous, genial British artist, this energetic, often amusing documentary MARC QUINN – MAKING WAVES, shot by Quinn’s long time friend and collaborator, BAFTA and Grierson documentary award winning director GERRY FOX, delves into the nature of creativity. Given unprecedented insight into an artistic practice that zips around the globe, Gerry Fox takes the viewer on a fascinating journey with his subject and reveals exactly what it takes to be a successful artist in today’s contemporary art world.

Gerry Fox takes us from the unveiling of Quinn’s hypnotic giant bronze seashells – The Archaeology of Art (above) – in New York to the reworking of the Alison Lapper sculpture in Venice; from the showing of his giant bronze orchid at the 2013 Chelsea Flower Show (above) to exhibitions of his work in Hong Kong and Istanbul and includes a fascinating visit to the various teams weaving tapestries of his work and refining his sculptures to his precise vision.

Fox has a delightful rapport with his subject and this intimacy, coupled with an on-the-fly filmmaking style, enables the audience to be present for the genesis of ideas that will later become thrilling artworks as well as sharing personal epiphanies such as Quinn’s spontaneous conversion to veganism – which sits interestingly alongside his gigantic meat portraits! The film also has a playful eye for the absurdities of the art world which Quinn treats with a Zen-like parity; whether it’s hanging with Lionel Richie, chatting to fans and collectors, passing Kanye West and Kim Kardashian at one of his opening parties, casting for models at a tattoo convention or meeting the Queen.

This is an intriguing film, an entertaining insight into the journey of one of the UK’s most collectable artists.
