Today (Public Tomorrow) London’s favourite boutique art fair, the London Original Print Fair opens at the Royal Academy of Arts. Bringing together some 50 international exhibitors with expert print knowledge, the show provides an opportunity to buy contemporary prints and rare works by modern and old masters. This year sees a wealth of newly published works by leading contemporary artists exhibited for the first time at the fair. LOPF 2014 opens on Thursday 24th April at the Royal Academy and runs for four days with a dynamic programme of talks and events by artists, printmakers and collectors.
Highlights for the 2014 fair include a number of works by WW1 war artists Paul Nash, CWR Nevinson and Claude Shepperson. Dealers of modern masters are offering significant works by Matisse, Picasso and Bacon, and print publishers showcase new editions by Peter Doig, Harland Miller and Royal Academicians Gillian Ayres, Bob & Roberta Smith, Grayson Perry and Mali Morris among others. International artists are well represented at the fair with work by artists including Andy Warhol, Ellsworth Kelly and Tiina Kivinen.
Visitors to the fair are given exclusive access to a series of talks by leading artists and printmakers such as Harland Miller, Albert Irvin, Anita Klein and Royal Academicians Norman Ackroyd, Chris Orr, and Anne Desmet. Talks by collecting and print process experts include Frederick Mulder on Picasso the printmaker, Alan Cristea on Gillian Ayres RA, and John Mackechnie and Marcus Rees Roberts offering insights into the print process.
In collaboration with the RA, LOPF will be celebrating the versatile art of printmaking throughout April with #PrintMonth. The RA hosts two print exhibitions within the Sackler Galleries and Tennant Gallery. Renaissance Impressions, a richly rewarding exploration of chiaroscuro woodcuts from the collections of George Baselitz Hon RA and the Albertina Museum in Vienna includes a film demonstrating techniques by Stephen Chambers RA and Mike Taylor from Paupers Press. Alongside this, an exhibition of etchings and screenprints by Norman Stevens ARA runs until 25 May. Further afield print shows across London include Dulwich Picture Gallery, British Museum, National Gallery, The Courtauld and Art on the Underground.
The galleries, print dealers and print publishers at LOPF offer a wealth of expertise for those already collecting and for those who are new to buying prints. As the largest such event in Europe, LOPF offers a platform to intelligent collecting.
