The deadline for submissions is Midday on Monday 15 July 2013.
BALTIC has announced Fig.1, an open submission exhibition to be held in the project space at BALTIC 39 from 4th September – 6th October.

Fig.1 is an opportunity for artists to test works and ideas, or to develop works in progress within a public context. The exhibition will be selected by Turner Prize-nominated artist Hilary Lloyd, BALTIC Assistant Curator, Will Cooper and BALTIC Chief Curator, Laurence Sillars.

Launched in April 2012, BALTIC’s project space was conceived primarily as a location for artists to try new projects and take risks within a supportive environment and to facilitate discussion around the production of new work. This new exhibition strand aims to encourage and support artists to develop their practice beyond the studio through short-term projects and experiments.

Fig.1 will last for 5 weeks and be made up of 10 projects by 10 artists, each lasting 5 days. Artists will be assigned one of the two gallery spaces at BALTIC 39. Proposals that demonstrate an immediate benefit to the development of recent work or works in progress will be prioritised. Only work made during the past twelve months (July 2012 – present), currently in progress, or made for (or during) this exhibition are eligible. Exhibiting artists will receive a fee and, through additional support, will be encouraged to programme events during their exhibitions. BALTIC will also commission a writer to blog about each of the exhibitions as they open and to write an essay that documents the entire project.

‘Fig 1 will continue BALTIC’s ambition to provide opportunities for artists to question the boundaries of their practice. The programme of projects will also enable a critically engaged dialogue to emerge and for shared concerns to be identified’

Godfrey Worsdale, Director BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art.

The deadline for submissions is Midday on Monday 15 July 2013.
