Daniel Barnes is a philosopher who explores the meaning of contemporary art in the age of global capitalism. His PhD offered a resolution to the Heidegger/Schapiro debate over the meaning of van Gogh’s paintings of shoes. He has taught philosophy at the University of Nottingham and aesthetic theory at Chelsea College of Art, and is currently teaching a course on the philosophy of art and capitalism at the London School of Philosophy. Daniel has published articles on pictorial representation, architectural experience, tragedy and street art; he is currently contemporary art critic for ArtSlant London, Aesthetica magazine and this is tomorrow. His main project at present is a philosophical analysis of the art of Damien Hirst, which argues that Hirst’s apparent obsession with spectacle, money and myth is intrinsic to a refined understanding of his art as essential to the current epoch. As a curator, Daniel has worked with Richard Stone and is currently developing projects as a co-director of NewThey. Daniel is philosopher in residence for The Butcher’s Apron on NTS Radio.
