BYOB at Moving Image | Vitirine in Brighton | From Film Co Labs

On Satruday the attic space of the beautiful Bargehouse, that was home to Moving Image Contemporary Video Art Fair, was taken over by Film Co Labs’ “BYOB: Bring Your Own Beamer”.

The roof space was set up with screens and projectors, and a range of talented young film makers turned up with an entrancing collection of their own beamers, playing on everything from mac laptops to old style slide projectors.

This was one of the gems of the Frieze sattelite events, and something which FAD stumbled across. Other events not to miss include organisers Film Co Labs’ exhibition Vitrine in Brighton. Illuminating shop windows with short silent films, Film co Lab harness the sounds of the festival to create a unique soundtrack for each film. Bringing cinema out of the dark and into the street, the boundary between art and life is challenged and the audience transformed from spectators to participants.

Screening up to 15 films in Brighton’s shop windows. The idea of the exhibition is to break away from the division between life and art (usually enclosed in a gallery or a museum) and life and film (usually in a dark, closed space). The pieces encourage a process of reflection about the context and framing or art/film as well as the daily use of the streets and shop windows, allowing for different readings of space and film to emerge. The films span both upcoming artists and established figures of the art world, helping young artists to promote their work and simultaneously developing a dialogue with better know films that will give both fresh meanings.

Another magical event is the forthcoming all nighter of films in Brighton, to celebrate the annual free all night arts festival. Happening as the clocks go back on 29th October 2011 FAD can vouch it certainly was something different to do on Frieze Week Saturday, it’s sure to be something different to do in the middle of the night.
