VIKTORIAN Alphabets, Steampunk, Weapons & Toys Private View: 13th September 2011

Exhibition Dates: 12th – 24th September 2011

Viktorian showcases three main bodies of Viktor Koen’s work in different stages of their lifecycle and his own.

The collection includes the celebrated print series, Dark Peculiar Toys and its typographical companion, Toyphabet. Warheads is a triptych of life size prints of men with military arms heads, which will be shown for the first time at The Coningsby Gallery, and its related illustrated alphabet, titled Warphabet.

Finally, works in progress from Bestiary; a visual study of hybrids, is the product of a long fascination with Greek Mythology and archival photography. Based on a set of hybrid creatures and influenced by religious iconography, these incredible creatures have complex, dramatic personalities, where heroes and beasts become difficult to tell apart.

Quote:

“It would be glamorous to think of the merging of technology and humanity as harmonious… fluid…artistic. At first glance, Viktor Koen’s images are more frozen glimpses of unholy harmony rather than holy matrimony. Look deeper… Metal moans as it collides with human flesh: rivets pop, muscle shreds, structures fuse until we can no longer pinpoint where humanity ends and dreams begins. Viktor’s works are consistent – they do not rant and rave about their symbiosis. They accept themselves. They are harmonious… fluid… artistic. They ask no forgiveness, they are much too busy telling the world that they belong here; interpretive spiritual visions of what we’ve
done to ourselves.”
