If the walls could speak…
In a feat of brilliant mischief ArtPad took all of the best boutique galleries in San Francisco and gave them a room each at a classic American Hotel/Motel (that somehow still exists in the heart of the city) to showcase their latest tastes of contemporary artmagic. Phoenix Hotel/Motel lies not just in the heart of the city, but smack in the middle of the Tenderloin, which (is full of smack..and) has one of the biggest street occupancies in the country, but is also home to some of the latest greatest shiekhest art happenings this side of Albuquerque, and probably the other side too.
So…if the walls could talk…they would have been mumbling…through tasty mouthfulls of contemporary/sexy painting, reflection, translation, statement & statue…before they could give away their cheeky secrets. More collective pieces than the SFMOMA in this little hotel/motel, the bathrooms having their share, some artists were even in the closet, attracting questionable puns from the crowd (seriously heard it 3 times…implying their need for liberation but also expressing how well hung they were).
Overall..I was overwhelmed, like some arty shaman dipped my head in San Francisco’s collective conscience…and I surfaced in a happy daze, rich with perspective, and somehow comfortably violated. As far as the shows credentials: 21st Century, new, contemporary…check, boutique bay area…check, boutique beyond…check provocative…double check, music & performance…triple check (roaming/swimming artists and cello accompanied by a heavenly harsh voice, crazy cool drummers, mad DJ… amongst much more…what do you expect when you have The Black Rock Arts Foundation…part of the Burning man team…in charge of entertainment). Maria Jensen and her team kicked ass, and with the co-operation of 20+ galleries, and the BRA crew, they will keep kicking it through the weekend. Thanks ArtPad! for an unexpected education.
