Hush answers FAD’s Questions

hush

1 When did you start to make art?
I’ve always made art, i don’t think its something you choose to do, it chooses you.

2 How did you evolve into a professional artist?

It was a natural progression, I studied at Art School for 5 years and graduated in Design & Illustration and worked commercially for years but always made art. I showed in small pop up shows in Europe and the States, my work started to pick up interest and group shows and 2 man shows where offered, evenually turning into solo shows. Its been a long journey but a natural one.

3 What drove you to make art as a professional vocation?

Its always what you don’t expect to take off that does, i just made work i loved and was passionate about rather than trying to fill a criteria. I just stayed true to my art.

4 Explain your inspiration?
Love, life, contradictions, everything i here, see…

5 In what way does your inspiration transform into ideas?

I always make a body of work around a subject, the ideas never end, its a hard question to answer.

6 From Ideas to production of art – how? And why?
It just happens

7 Could your ideas be portrayed in any other medium? If so which?

Yes, film, sculpture, installation, I want to explore it all.

8 Which artists would you most like to blatantly rip off?
I’m inspired by alot of past and present artists but wouldn’t like to rip any off.

9 Why is your art made?
It has to be made, i suppose its progression that drives me, your always striving to make the ultimate piece that answers everything you work towards. But will you ever get there, probably not.

10 What does being an artist mean to you?
Everything, its a passion that you can’t and wouldn’t want to change.

11 Are you happy with your reasons for making art? i.e Are there any trade offs that make life hard?
I’m in a fortunate position not to compromise my work, I’m very happy just making art.

12 When does your art become successful?

When you choose it to be.

13 What is art?
Ah the age old question, I’ll leave that question to the 1st year art students or Duchamp:)

14 How do you start the process of making work?
Stand in front of a blank canvas, if your not inspired theres something wrong.

15 Who prices your work? And how is the price decided upon?

The Money Men:) but i imagine ‘Supply and Demand’

16 What is your next; move, project, show etc?

I have a solo show with ‘the Art Lounge’ in Redchurch Street, Shoreditch, London, starting on the 12th November, 2009.

White Walls/ The Shooting Gallery ,San Francisco, May 2010

Anonymous Contemporary Art Gallery, New York, October 2010

17 What are the pros and cons of the art market?

The pros and cons.

18 Which pieces would you like to be remembered for?

My next piece.

19 Any routine in making your artwork? If so what?
I’m very strict with myself and go to the studio everyday and make art.

20 What has been the biggest break in your career?
I’m still waiting for it:)

21 Who has been the biggest influence on you?
Probably Banksy in the sense that he’s proved you don’t have to conform to the art market.

22 How many artworks have you given away and to whom?

I give a fair few away to charity and good causes each year and the odd friends always take bits from my studio:)

Why are you fishing;)
