Fenix is Rotterdam’s museum of migration, exploring how the movement of people has shaped cultures, cities and societies across the world. Housed in a restored historic warehouse on the city’s docks—once a departure point for millions of migrants travelling to North America—the museum combines contemporary art, photography, historical objects and personal stories to examine migration as a universal human experience. Opened in 2025, Fenix presents an international programme of exhibitions and commissions that connect art with lived experience, memory and identity.

The museum brings together works by leading contemporary artists alongside archival material and community-led projects, creating exhibitions that explore themes of displacement, belonging, hope and cultural exchange. Its landmark building, transformed by MAD Architects, features the striking Tornado staircase, a spiralling public viewpoint that offers panoramic views across Rotterdam’s historic harbour. Through its collection and exhibitions, Fenix positions migration not simply as a historical event but as an ongoing force that continues to shape the modern world.
