Xavier Hufkens has announced the representation of Chinese artist Qiu Xiaofei. Best known for his evocatively coloured paintings
Qiu Xiaofei (b. 1977, Harbin, China) is a Chinese contemporary artist working primarily in painting, installation and mixed media. Qiu Xiaofei’s work explores memory, history and personal experience through layered compositions that combine abstraction with fragmented figuration. His paintings often draw on photographs, archival material and everyday imagery, reworking them into atmospheric and shifting visual narratives.
Qiu Xiaofei builds surfaces through repetition, erasure and reapplication of paint, allowing images to appear and disappear across the canvas. This process creates a sense of temporal instability, where past and present overlap. His work frequently reflects on social change in China, positioning individual memory within broader historical and cultural transformations.
Qiu Xiaofei has exhibited internationally in major museums, biennials and galleries. His practice places him within a generation of Chinese contemporary artists engaging with history, perception and the evolving language of painting in a global context.
