Damien Hirst at Gagosian Gallery in Manhattan

Damien Hirst, who knows a thing or two about attention-getting installations, takes a break from sculpture with his latest show, Corpus: Drawings 1981–2006, opening at Gagosian Gallery in Manhattan on September 14. "Drawing for me is an important tool in visualizing my works—things can start from a conversation in a bar or a very simple sketch," he says. Of the 200-plus items in the show, Hirst, not surprisingly, is fondest of "the shark drawings" that inspired his infamous shark suspended in formaldehyde sculpture, "The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living." "I expect those to be the key pieces," he says.
