Charlie Tallott has won the 2024 Photo London x Nikon Emerging Photographer Award.
The announcement was made last night Wednesday 15 May during a special ceremony at the Nikon Gallery, Somerset House during Photo London 2024.
Originally from Yorkshire, Tallott began taking photos in and around his grandparent’s house in Cross Gates, East Leeds. The influence of his family, upbringing, and hometown permeates his work, which centres around delving into the profound social and psychological impacts of deindustrialisation through photography.
At Least Until the World Stops Going Round is a series of work produced three years ago following a suicide attempt. During the three months that Tallott spent recovering in the care of an NHS crisis team he used photography as refuge, striving to create utopian realities through his images. The work acts as a euphoric counterbalance to his real-life experience at the time. Bright snapshots act as a window into seeing the most high-saturated, blissful scenes whereas black and white imagery littered throughout the project act as subdued, lonely moments.
The project’s title was influenced by aphorisms Tallott’s mum would tell him and is a statement of hope and solace, which acts as a reminder that our darkest moments are temporary.
Tallott explains:
When you experience a really low point, photography [can become] a vessel to move from it. Your eyes can go and just live somewhere else, a different world…. It’s remembering there’s good and bad. You have to go with the flow of each, enjoying both as much as you can. There’s almost a feeling of appreciation and understanding toward how you feel, knowing that it’s all just temporary. The world will keep turning, and the sun will turn up tomorrow.
As the winner, Charlie is awarded a Nikon Z Series camera and a choice of two NIKKOR Z lenses, with specialist training from Nikon School to help take advantage of the capabilities that Nikon’s Z range has to offer.

The photographers were shortlisted by the Photo London 2024 Curatorial committee. Photo London is a place to encounter the most innovative emerging artists, new work by established masters and rare vintage pieces, and as such is guided by a Curatorial Committee comprised of some of the field’s most esteemed curators, critics and museum directors.
