Maximillian Wölfgang Gallery has just opened Multitudes, a group exhibition that explores the plurality of identity. From cubist paintings to light sculptures, Gabe Weis, Walera Martynchik, Yorgos, and Nigel Grimmer invite you to question and reimagine the perspectives of selfhood as a means of inner exploration.
In Whitman’s Song of Myself he states “I am large, I contain multitudes”, which expresses the complexity and diversity of his own identity. This suggests that we encompass a vast array of multi-faceted experiences, emotions, and perspectives within ourselves.
This line reflects the belief in the richness and depth of the individual human spirit. It also speaks to the embrace of contradiction and the rejection of strict definitions or boundaries. We see ourselves not as a fixed entity, but as a constantly evolving and multifaceted being, capable of embodying a multitude of roles, thoughts, and feelings simultaneously. This idea challenges the notion of a singular unified self and celebrates the expansiveness of human existence.
