Colette Lumiere is a pioneering artist whose vast and enduring body of work has both innovated and defied the categories of installation, performance, photography, and painting from the early 1970s through the present. She has been known by the personas of Justine (1978–83), Mata Hari and the Stolen Potatoes (1984–86), Countess Reichenbach (1986–91), the House of Olympia (1991-2001), and Lumiere (2001-2020).
Colette’s artwork is in the collections of the Guggenheim, New York; MOCA, Los Angeles; The Brooklyn Museum, New York; The Aldrich Museum, Ridgefield, CT; The Museum Ludwig, Cologne; The Wolfsburg Museum, Wolfsburg, Germany; and The Berlinische Gallery, Berlin, among others. She has presented her work at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; MoMA PS1, New York; the New Museum, New York; the Grey Art Gallery, New York; the Musee D’art Moderne, Lausanne; the Museum of Contemporary Art Houston; the Berlin Kunstverein; the Munich Kunstverein; the Munster Kunstverein; the Museum of Modern Art, Finland; and the Musee National De Montreal, as well as the Paris Biennial (1977), Venice Biennial (1985) and Montreal Biennial (2002). Colette has been the recipient of grants from the Joan Mitchell Foundation (2013), Warhol Foundation (2013), John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation (2006), Pollock-Krasner Foundation (2004), and the National Endowment for the Arts (1976/1985), among others.
