RM has become one of the art world’s most closely watched collectors. This autumn, the BTS musician will present the first museum exhibition drawn from his personal collection at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA).
Opening 3rd October 2026, RM x SFMOMA: Between You and Me will pair around 200 works from RM’s collection with paintings, sculptures and installations from SFMOMA’s holdings, creating a dialogue between modern and contemporary Korean art and artists from around the world. It will be the exhibition’s only US presentation.
Curated by RM alongside SFMOMA curators América Castillo and Hyoeun Kim, the exhibition reflects the musician’s long-standing engagement with visual art. Since first sharing his museum visits and acquisitions online, RM has become one of the art world’s most visible collectors, using his platform to champion Korean artists internationally.
The exhibition will feature key figures from RM’s collection, including Yun Hyong-keun, Park Rehyun, Kwon Okyon, Kim Yun Shin, To Sangbong and Chang Ucchin, presented alongside works from SFMOMA’s collection by artists including Kim Whanki, Mark Rothko, Agnes Martin, Henri Matisse, Georgia O’Keeffe and Paul Klee. Many of the Korean works will be shown publicly in the United States for the first time.
Rather than presenting the collection as a celebrity showcase, Between You and Me explores the connections RM has drawn between Korean modernism and international art history, inviting visitors to consider shared themes across cultures, generations and artistic movements. The exhibition is described as a conversation between East and West, the modern and the contemporary, and the personal and the universal.
“We live in an age defined by boundaries,”
RM said.
“This exhibition at SFMOMA reflects those boundaries: between East and West, Korea and America, the modern and the contemporary, the personal and the universal. I don’t want to prescribe how these works should be seen; whether out of curiosity or study, all perspectives are welcome. My only hope is that this exhibition can be a small but sturdy bridge for many.”
SFMOMA invited RM to develop the project after recognising the depth and thoughtfulness of his collection, which has grown into one of the most closely followed private collections of Korean modern art. Janet Bishop, SFMOMA’s Thomas Weisel Family Chief Curator, said the exhibition offers visitors “an unprecedented opportunity” to experience RM’s collection in dialogue with the museum’s own holdings and to discover new perspectives on Korean art.
