FAD NEWS: National Portrait Gallery extends summer opening hours for Marilyn Monroe: A Portrait

The National Portrait Gallery is extending its opening hours for Marilyn Monroe: A Portrait, giving visitors more opportunities to see one of this summer’s biggest exhibitions

Following strong demand, the Gallery has released additional tickets and will remain open until 9 pm every Thursday throughout August, supplementing its regular Friday and Saturday late openings.

Marilyn Monroe, 1955, by Milton H. Greene, © 1962 MM LLC (Photograph by Allan Grant). Taken in Connecticut in 1956, this image of a young freckle-faced star reveals an intimate side seen only by few. During the summer, Marilyn and the Greene family would go a mile down the road to the home of Richard Rogers and end a hot summer day with a cool swim in the pool.

The exhibition, which opened in June to mark the centenary of Marilyn Monroe’s birth, explores the life, career and enduring legacy of the Hollywood icon through photography and portraiture. Bringing together works that span Monroe’s career and beyond, the show examines how she actively shaped her public image while continuing to influence generations of artists and photographers.

To coincide with the extended opening hours, the Gallery is introducing a programme of Marilyn-inspired hospitality. Visitors can enjoy themed cocktails at Larry’s Bar, including the award-winning ‘Monroe’ cocktail, while The Portrait Restaurant is offering a special summer menu paired with Marilyn Monroe’s favourite champagne, Piper-Heidsieck. Dining packages can be booked alongside exhibition tickets.

The Portrait Restaurant will also host a series of special events with Piper-Heidsieck throughout August, including champagne tastings, curator-led exhibition tours and exclusive tasting menus.

Running until 10th January 2027, Marilyn Monroe: A Portrait has become one of the National Portrait Gallery’s major summer attractions, and the additional evening openings are expected to help meet continued visitor demand.
