Tate Modern’s next Late on Friday 26 June will see artist, choreographer and performer nora chipaumire bring her acclaimed Infinities Commission gadzi to life with a large-scale live activation in the museum’s East Tank.
Joined by ten performers, dancers and musicians, chipaumire will transform the immersive installation into a live environment of movement, sound and collective ritual. The performance forms the centrepiece of a special Tate Late inspired by the commission, with DJ sets from Bradley Zero and Charisse C continuing the evening into the night.
Open now at Tate Modern, gadzi is chipaumire’s most ambitious UK installation to date. The work draws on the landscapes, legends and ancestral histories of Zimbabwe, taking its name from gadziguru, the oldest and most powerful female presence in Shona cosmology.
Still committed to a punk approach in her sixties, chipaumire’s multidisciplinary practice spans dance, opera, installation and film. For gadzi, she explores themes of migration, resilience, anti-colonial resistance and embodiment through sculpture, sound and performance.

The East Tank has been transformed into an environment of towering handmade stone-like structures, inspired by Zimbabwe’s granite landscapes and embedded with custom-built sound systems. Drawing on London’s dub and punk traditions alongside Shona musical culture, the installation invites visitors to move through the space, sit on the speakers and experience sound as a physical force.
Throughout the environment, moving-image works emerge among the sculptural forms, creating what the artist describes as a living and breathing organism shaped by memory, spirit and place.
Visitors unable to attend the Tate Late will also have opportunities to experience the work activated through daytime performances taking place on 27th and 28th June.
Part installation, part performance space and part sonic landscape, gadzi continues Tate Modern’s Infinities Commission programme, which supports ambitious new projects by international artists working across performance, installation and time-based media.
