GAVLAK, West Palm Beach, announces the representation of Montréal-based artist Renée Condo (b. 1979, Gesgapegiag, QC). This November, Condo will debut a large-scale installation at the 65th edition of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts’ Museum Ball. Elements of this work will be reimagined and reconfigured for her first solo exhibition with GAVLAK in West Palm Beach, opening on November 15, 2025. The artist is also represented by Blouin Division, Montréal.
Known for her sweeping beadwork compositions, Condo has developed a distinctive visual language that explores interconnectedness through a Mi’gmaq perspective. Working with thousands of wooden beads—each meticulously sanded, painted, and arranged into rhythmic fields—she draws on Mi’gmaq beadwork traditions while engaging the vocabulary of contemporary abstraction. Informed by her fascination with physics, metaphysics, and the fundamental nature of reality, she examines how these forces shape human existence. By reimagining beadwork at an expanded scale, Condo both advances her artistic vision and honors the deep historical and cultural significance of Indigenous traditions.
Condo’s work stands out for its synthesis of heart, scientific inquiry, and relentless curiosity. Her fresh aesthetic, coupled with a distinctly Mi’gmaq perspective, gives rise to a powerful artistic voice. By bringing cultural heritage into dialogue with contemporary abstraction and existential inquiry, she has forged a practice that is both distinctive and deeply resonant.

Condo’s compositions invite reflection on the relational threads that bind all things, bridging cultural memory, material innovation, and spiritual inquiry. “I see my work as akin to briefs—each one a visual argument advocating for love and understanding and exploring in greater depth,” shares Condo. At a time when societal fractures are increasingly evident, her work offers a path forward, guided by the Mi’gmaq laws of Heart Knowledge—a principle that calls for action driven by empathy and platonic love. Through this lens, her art is both a statement and an invitation, urging a deeper, more compassionate engagement with the world around us.

Renée Condo (b. 1979, Gesgapegiag, QC; lives and works in Tiohtià:ke, Montréal, QC) holds a BFA in Studio Arts and an MFA in Sculpture from Concordia University.
