THAT’s INTERESTING Faissal El-Malak

To trace the shape of London’s cultural revival, we asked the artists and instigators what excites them now. Then we stepped back—and let the story ripple outward, one nomination at a time

Faissal El-Malak is a Palestinian artist, designer and healer based in London.

What’s interesting in Art –

The Lost Paintings exhibition that just opened in Montreal Canada. Coming to Boston, Belfast, London and Bristol next. The show invites 53 Palestinian artists to reclaim one of the work titles from the last show of Palestinian-Lebanese artist Maroun Tomb in 1947 in Haifa before he was exiled in the 1948 Nakba and all the works subsequently lost in war and pillage. I am showing a new body of work that retraces my family history and property in Haifa.

What’s interesting in Design –

The Thread Memory exhibition at the V&A in Dundee, Scotland, showcases the rich history and language of traditional Palestinian embroidery. It also marks 45 years since Dundee has twined with the city of Nablus in Palestine. The show brings together dresses from the V&A’s own collection in addition to dresses from the Palestinian Museum and private collections. There are also a few commissions and items from contemporary Palestinian designers including a look by myself from my previous career as a fashion designer.
