Herald St has announced representation of Sang Woo Kim.
In his practice, Sang Woo Kim (b.1994, Seoul) addresses his fractured identity, dissecting a sense of alienation that has affected him from a young age. Kim moved to the United Kingdom from South Korea as a child, and throughout his life, he has grappled with a sense of otherness shaped by the clash between his traditional Korean upbringing and the Western norms surrounding him. Through a poetic visual language rich in metaphors and analogies, his self-portraits and pigment transfers confront the challenges of navigating cultural duality and the complexities of existence today. His works embody internal conflicts, provoking a sense of revelation and understanding in the viewer and engaging them to truly ‘see’.
The Seer, The Seen, Kim’s inaugural solo exhibition at Herald St, received press in publications including AnOther, émergent, Ocula, and Something Curated, among other titles.
As Eugene Yiu Nam Cheung observed in the accompanying text, Kim’s works
‘…stand as a theatre of self-interrogation or a hall of mirrors, whereby viewers are left to read themselves into [his] world, witnessing an artist searching for an image of himself that has yet to be seen.’
