Carpenters Workshop Gallery participates in the 20th edition of Design Miami, under the curatorial theme of ‘Blue Sky’, which explores the boldest leaps of imagination happening in design today.
The booth showcases a selection of contemporary practitioners at the cutting edge of contemporary art and design, featuring work by Vincenzo De Cotiis, Aki+Arnaud Cooren, Ingrid Donat, DRIFT, Kendell Geers, Steven Haulenbeek, Roger Herman,Marcin Rusak and Yinka Shonibare.
The most recent iteration of Windy Chair by Yinka Shonibare is featured. Through this work, Shonibare has masterfully created the illusion of the dynamic movementof a piece of fabric caught in a gust of wind, symbolizing the fluidity and adaptabilityof human experience in an increasingly interconnected world. This work is an interpretation of his celebrated Windy Sculpture series; here, the concept has beenreinterpreted for Carpenters Workshop Gallery to include the functional role of thepiece as a seat.Shonibare uses Western art history and literature to explore contemporary cultureand national identities, with works examining issues of race and class through themedia of painting, sculpture, photography and film. Windy Chair touches on themesof migration, cultural exchange and the transience of identity. The use of African waxprint textiles adds layers of cultural and historical significance, challenging conventionalnotions of identity and representation.
Vincenzo De Cotiis, an artist whose sculptures are adorned with a sense oftemporality, communicated through the object’s materials, texture and preciseconstruction, will show DC2337B Cabinet with Drawer. Silver, glass and hand-paintedfiberglass collide in this work, forging a spherical composition that appears like afragment pulled from the dark depths of the earth’s core. Its reflective exterior imbuesambiguity as it morphs into a modern, elegant piece of history.
Table de Salle à Manger Facettes GM Aby Ingrid Donat is marked with a repetitive, mathematical pattern inspired by scarification traditions belonging to cultures withwhich the artist has come into contact throughout her career. Donat is one of themost significant contemporary practitioners in the decorative arts, known for imbuingmaterials like bronze and wood with warmth and vitality. This work reflects the artist’sinterest in mark-making as a form of historical and cultural storytelling.
