One of FAD’s favourite artists Gretchen Andrew (American, b. 1988) who likes to blend trad art forms like photography and oil painting with advanced super cool tech like robotics, algorithms, and artificial intelligence has unveiled her news series at Paris Photo 2024 Facetune Portraits.
Facetune Portraits is a series that merges traditional techniques with custom robotics to apply AI-driven beauty filters directly onto ink-printed photographic portraits using wet oil. The result is a compelling juxtaposition that draws the viewer into the tension between our natural identities and the digital ideals imposed by technology.
Through these double portraits, in which the unmodified human face coexists with an algorithmically “perfected” version, Gretchen interrogates these standards, examining what is preserved or erased in the digital transformation of identity. Facetune Portraits challenges viewers to consider: what parts of us are lost, and what remains intact?
Gretchen Andrew’s Facetune Portraits presented by L’AVANT GALERIE VOSSEN 7th – 10th November, Paris Photos 2024, Grand Palais Stand F04.
