Dame Vivien Duffield has made a major gift of £1.75m to the Clore Leadership Programme to celebrate its 21st anniversary and secure its future funding.

Dame Vivien Duffield, Life President, Clore Leadership said:

I am so proud of Clore Leadership, all the brilliant people who have played a part in making it happen and all the talented and dedicated Fellows that are changing the face of the art world. As the programme comes of age, it is a pleasure to support the next phase, as Clore Leadership is more necessary than ever.

The Clore Leadership Programme emerged from Dame Vivien Duffield’s inspirational idea to develop a generation of exceptional cultural leaders. Initiated in 2003 by the Clore Duffield Foundation, it set out to create the UK’s first cross-disciplinary leadership programme for the arts, cultural and creative sectors.

Now recognised as one of the world’s leading cultural leadership programmes, it continues to develop leadership potential across the cultural and creative sectors. The programme has developed a generation of exceptional cultural leaders and is supported today by a mix of private and public funding.

Since 2003, over 2,600 individuals have completed one of the Clore Leadership courses. These dynamic cultural leaders are committed to leading culture and have a diverse range of experience, skills, and expertise gained through their intensive development with Clore Leadership.

Clore Leadership alumni include: Maria Balshaw, Director, Tate; Axel Ruger, Director Designate, The Frick Collection, New York; Gus Casely-Hayford, Director of V&A East; Sara Wajid, Co-CEO of Birmingham Museum Trust; Vicki Amedume, Artistic Director and CEO of Upswing and Associate Director at The New Vic Theatre; Indhu Rubasingham, Director, National Theatre; Pooja Ghai, Artistic Director, Tamasha Theatre Company; Federico Bonelli, Artistic Director, Northern Ballet; Suzanne Bull MBE, CEO, Attitude is Everything and Jackie Whylie, Artistic Director and CEO, National Theatre of Scotland.

Moira Sinclair, Chair of Clore Leadership, said:

I would like to thank Dame Vivien Duffield personally as well as the Clore Duffield Foundation team past and present for their sustained support. Putting resources into infrastructure is never such an appealing prospect as front line activity. And the foresight and ambition to back such innovation as well as the sustained partnership it represents is truly impressive. We will do our best to honour the trust that this support represents.

The Clore Foundation has supported over 1,400 charities since it was formed 60 years ago, awarding grants of over £175 million to enhance the arts, Jewish life, education, health and welfare. Between 1980 and 2000 the Clore Foundation and the Vivien Duffield Foundation awarded over £51 million and £15 million respectively. Major beneficiaries include Tate, the Royal Opera House, the Southbank Centre, Oxford University and the Royal College of Art, who have all been supported by the Foundation to carry out major capital projects. The Foundation has also created a number of transformative programmes and institutions, including JW3, Eureka! and the Clore Leadership Programme.
