We want to celebrate and learn more about the characters driving the renaissance of the London gallery scene, and what better way than to resurrect THAT’s Interesting.
Last time we had Isaac Simon this time we have Laurie Barron.
Laurie Barron is a curator and writer living in London assistant director at The Artist Room and editorial associate at Plaster
What’s interesting in:
Some Art I’m Interested in:
I’m currently obsessed with Victor Boullet’s (b.1969, Oslo) paintings which – among other interests – deal with the mundanity and violence of everyday life. Connecting art historical references with social observation and personal biography, the work is raw, enigmatic and refreshing. We are soon to show them in London with a double exhibition that opens at The Artist Room on Thursday 3rd October, 6PM–8.30PM.
Some Design I’m Interested In:
Artist Rhys Coren is presenting new marble tables made in collaboration with Peter Noyce at Young Space in tandem with the London Design Festival (the venue is also designed by the minimalist design maven John Pawson). The furniture takes his iconic patterned paintings into three dimensions, with layers of intricately cut monochromatic marble. I can’t stop thinking about them…
Some Culture I’m Interested In:
Plaster magazine is publishing incredible content. Fabulous recent articles I recommend include Harriet Lloyd-Smith on what it’s like to leave an art world career; Jacob Charles Wilson on decline of artist studios in London; Oskar Oprey on defending on-screen art villains; Izzy Bilkus on the rise of ugly art; and Billy Parker making a confession about Tracey Emin’s bed. Happy reading!
Some Fashion I’m Interested In:
I’m a sucker for anything preppy chic with a cheeky twist – Stefan Cooke and Jake Burt’s eponymous brand does this super well. I just need it all…
Some Music I’m Interested In.
I know nothing about what is happening in contemporary music. My favourite DJs are Jeffrey Hinton and Princess Julia – they’re usually playing something fun and fab at Adonis or Anal House Meltdown (who’s flyers have unreal artwork by Guille Carmona)…
A museum or gallery show recommendation:
My brilliant friend Fiontán Moran has co-curated the upcoming Mike Kelley survey at Tate with Catherine Wood and Beatriz Garcia-Velasco. The influence of Kelley’s work on contemporary artists – from Alex da Corte to Jamian Juliano-Villani – is unparalleled and I’m excited to see his skewering exploration of the American psyche and human condition.
I nominate Fraser Brough from Cassius & Co
