The Farsight Gallery presents… Gender Translucence and Other Stories, Francesca Alaimo’s first solo exhibition with the gallery.
Shortlisted for this year’s Ruskin Prize, Francesca Alaimo (b. 1970, Rome, Italy) is a self-taught visual artist based in London. They create interventions on paper through the manipulation and transformation of materials and images using prints, soft pastels, oils, acrylics and wax – media that are foundational of Francesca’s practice.
This exhibition, the artist’s largest solo presentation to date in London, takes its name from the perception of gender as a semi-transparent screen behind which silhouettes are visible yet unrecognisable. The notion of translucence also brings to mind the sheen that wax leaves on the artworks after the artist’s intervention.
Moving clockwise around the gallery, Gender Translucence and Other Stories traces the arc of the artist’s practice and brings together old, new and never-before-seen artworks that address themes of shame, queer identity, gender questioning, vulnerability and courage. Through intimate acts of disclosure the artist wishes to reveal what exists beyond appearances and to question, inspire and empower the viewers along a gender non-conforming journey, encouraging them to contemplate their own paths of self- exploration and growth.
These intimate works are complemented by multidisciplinary and participatory elements including videos, personal testimonies, workshops and an audience-interactive work in progress.
