2024 ACS Studio Prize Shortlist announced, returning for the eighth year to offer recent graduates the chance to win £6,000 to contribute to the cost of an artist’s studio in a UK city of their choice and the opportunity to take part in a group exhibition at Gurr Johns International, a global independent art advisory and appraisal group.
This year’s judges, pop artist and Royal Academician Allen Jones, artist and Director of the Royal Academy Schools Eliza Bonham Carter, artist and art patron Rosamond Brown and the Managing Director of ACS, Lady Bridgeman will select the five finalists and the winner from 21 shortlisted artists.
The five finalists will be announced the week beginning 26th August 2024 with the winner announced on 1st October at the ACS Studio Prize x Gurr Johns Exhibition Private View.
The Prize, which was launched in 2017 by Lady Bridgeman (founder of ACS and Bridgeman Images), Tim Marlowe and Maggi Hambling, was established after a number of our members’ spoke of the economic challenges they faced when starting their artistic careers. The ACS Studio Prize was founded to help.
Past winners include sculptor Marco Miehling who has since exhibited at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and was commissioned by Selfridges Art Block. Painter Rebecca Harper has since featured in multiple international solo shows and gained representation by the Huxley-Parlour Gallery. Araminta Blue, is currently represented by Gallery Rosenfeld.
David Gardner, who after winning Prize in 2022, was selected for a group commission for Hauser & Wirth Somerset Art Farm Shop. He was also invited to undertake a residency at the Palazzo Monti in Brescia and has had several solo and group exhibitions throughout the UK and EEA.
Dorcas Casey, winner of the 2021 Prize, was selected to exhibit works for FRESH at the British Ceramics Biennial. Dion Kitson, who’s first major solo exhibition, ‘Rue Brittania’ opened at the Ikon Gallery in May to great critical acclaim.
From its inception the Prize has been championed a host of renowned and respected artists and art market professionals including Gavin Turk, Celia Paul, Mat Collishaw, Flora Yukhnovich, Simon Martin (Pallant House), Eileen Cooper, Edoardo Monti (Palazzo Monti), Cathie Pilkington, Bob and Roberta Smith, Jo Baring (Ingram Collection), Paul Huxley, Rob & Nick Carter, Tim Marlowe and Maggi Hambling.
